NIV The Journey Bible Review

NIV The Journey Bible Review

I am a member of BookLook Bloggers and I was provided a copy of the NIV The Journey Bible for review. Any opinions expressed are my own.

If you’re looking to begin your spiritual journey and you’re investigating what works for you, the NIV Journey Bible is one to have at your side. I can’t tell you just how many things I love about this wonderful bible. I will say first however my copy is a soft cover and I would prefer if it were hard cover or leather bound. That’s my only compliant about the version I have. This would be the perfect study text for any theology student. The Journey Bible is based on the REVEAL study from Willow Creek. It explores and addresses key questions that readers may have about how relevant the bible is to us today.

I would suggest starting in the back of this bible. The explorer studies start on page 1650 and that’s a great place to start with your studies of the bible and learning about God. You could also use the “where to find it” or subject index if you’re looking for a particular subject. This bible even has a small concordance section. Great for learning the meaning and interpretations of certain words and subject matters. This bible also has book introductions but it’s not like one’s I’ve seen in other bibles. These include the bottom line – what’s the book about, central ideas – what are the main ideas in this book and the outline – lays out a frame of the book. It’s pretty simple and straight to the point. I love that because I can go to the start of any book and find what I want to read and not have to search the entire section to find it.

The Journey Bible has notes and insights like most study bibles but this one has seven explorer themes for those notes and insights. The seven themes are:

1.Discovering God
2.Addressing Questions
3.Strengthening Relationships
4.Reasons to Believe
5.Knowing Yourself
6.Why Jesus?
7.Managing Resources

This is one of the few bibles that really break things down and help people truly understand what they’re reading and how to apply it. The Five Alive Plan is a one month reading plan covering five books of the bible (Genesis, Deuteronomy, John, Acts and Romans) that contain the essential teaching of the bible. This bible would make a great gift for someone who was recently baptized. It’s a bible that you should definitely add to your collection.

About the NIV Journey Bible:

“You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”—Jeremiah 29:13

The NIV Journey Bible is uniquely designed to help readers discover the practical aspects of Christianity and better understand God. Patterned after the Willow Creek model of ministry and intended for those in the investigative stage of their spiritual journey, The Journey’s exploratory approach addresses key questions inquisitive readers may have about the Bible and its relevance today. Notes and insights are woven throughout the complete NIV Bible text, drawing readers into the message and pointing the way to a relationship with Jesus. Icons trace six seeker themes throughout Scripture: “Discovering God,” “Addressing Questions,” “Strengthening Relationships,” “Reasons to Believe,” “Knowing Yourself,” and “Managing Resources.” Also included in The Journey are introductory articles that define key concepts involved in being a spiritually open person, book introductions, indexes, a dictionary/concordance, and a “Fire Alive” reading plan covering Genesis, Deuteronomy, John, Acts, and Romans.

The Journey can be used as an evangelism tool and makes a perfect gift for new believers and those looking for answers to life’s deepest questions. It is also a helpful guide for veteran Christians who want a refreshing perspective on the basics of their belief.

From the moment your little girl was born, you knew you were going to be doing a lot of praying. But you may wonder, What exactly should I be praying for?

Rob and Joanna Teigen give you a strong foundation to build a lifelong habit of prayer for your daughter with a collection of specific prayers you can use to get started right now. And they explain a bit more of what girls go through growing up, including stress, purity issues, social pressure, modesty challenges, spiritual growth, and more.

Remember: just because you don’t always understand your daughter doesn’t mean that God doesn’t! Start asking for his guidance, protection, and blessings today.

My thoughts:

I’m not a father, my husband would be the best person to write this review but I will share my thoughts with you on this book.  It’s a must for any man who has a daughter.  No matter what her age is all fathers should have this book in their library.  In this world our children are up against so much that they always need prayers for something and with this book you can get a guide to help start you off with those prayers.  I couldn’t believe how many topics they covered in this book for ways a father could prayer for his daughter.  When she is having self-doubt, when she’s planning on dating, going through a storm, honoring her parents, having problems with lying, prayers for addiction, to help her with her walk with God and so much more.  I don’t think there’s a topic that they miss at all.  The Teigens who have three daughters of their own, so you can tell from the prayers they are very personal and ones they probably use with their own children.  I really like the format as well.  Each prayer starts with a bible verse and then the prayer making it easy for you to also incorporate Bible study as well.  All the prayers are just the right length that you can read several of them at once.  The book also contains stories from father’s that are also authors.  Ladies get this for your significant as soon as you find out you are going to be having a daughter and especially father’s of soon to be teen daughters get this book as well.  It’s a great resource and I am glad my husband has it as a guide for praying for our daughter.

My Friend Jesus Review & Giveaway

My Friend Jesus Review

Disclosure: I am a Tommy Nelson Mommy and I was provided the books below for review.  Any and all opinions are my own and have not been influenced.

As a Christian mother I want my children to know and have a relationship with Jesus and God.  I want to introduce them to his teachings and encourage them to live a life that is pleasing to him.  I want them to know these things but I know they are just not ready for the bible or certain books because they simply don’t understand some of what is written.  The book My Friend Jesus breaks it down for children to understand and it’s a perfect way to get my children started with getting closer to Jesus.

About the book:

Jesus can be your friend and Savior.

All Christian parents want their children to come to a relationship with Jesus. My Friend Jesus is written in fresh, clear language that children can understand and is appropriate for all denominations. The book not only tells the gospel story about Jesus, but also, in the most natural, gentle way, introduces children to a personal relationship with Him. A prayer at the end of the book guides children into that life-changing friendship with Jesus. This is the book author Kathryn Slattery wishes she had when her own children were young—which is the reason she wrote it!

Originally published as The Gospel for Kids, this book sold more than 100,000 copies. This new book will feature beautiful new art and lightly edited text.

Rave Reviews:

“It’s one of the best books of Jesus for young people I have encountered.”  —Madeleine L’Engle, Newberry Medal–winning author of the bestselling children’s classic A Wrinkle in Time

“Kathryn Slattery has told the story so simply, briefly, cutting right to the essentials, managing to mix the profoundest truth with humor, talking to children without talking down to them. The Gospel for Kids goes on our grandparent bookshelf with great anticipation.”  —Elizabeth and John Sherrill, coauthors of bestselling inspirational classics The Hiding Place and The Cross and the Switchblade

“A magnificent piece of writing, making the Gospel so plain and at the same time losing none of its beauty. The book is very attractive for adults also.”  —Dr. Norman Vincent Peale, author of the international bestseller The Power of Positive Thinking and founder of Guideposts magazine

My thoughts:

This book made the perfect addition for my daughter’s Christmas Eve Box.  I figured it would be a great read for her bedtime on Christmas Eve and to share this book with her and explain to her the reason we celebrate Christmas in the first place.  You don’t have to wait for an occasion as Christmas to share this book with your children though.  You can  introduce it to them whenever you like.  It would make a great Easter, First Communion, Baptism, or any religious celebration gift.  The book is priced at $12.99 and you can purchase it online from publisher.

Tommy Mommy is giving one lucky reader a chance to win a copy of the book.  You must be a US resident to enter and you must be 18 years or older.  Enter via the tool below.  Good Luck!

The 21 Toughest Questions

The 21 Toughest Questions Book Review

Disclosure: I was provided a copy of this book for review from Tyndale Blog Network.  Any and all opinions are my own and have not been influenced.

Title: The 21 Toughest Questions Your Kids Will Ask About Christianity

Author: Alex McFarland

Publisher: Tyndale

Published: 2013

ISBN: 978-1-58997-678-8

Genre: Family and Relationships, Parenting

Pages: 288

Price: $13.99

 About the book:

University apologist, director, and popular speaker Alex McFarland has spent the last two decades answering questions about Christian worldview and the Bible from children, teens, and parents. In The 21 Toughest Questions Your Kids Will Ask about Christianity, he summarizes questions today’s children and teens are asking about God, the Bible, and the problem of evil.

Alex’s experiences have taught him that how adults answer questions about God is as important as, if not more important than, what kids ask. He provides parents with teaching strategies that will help them reach their children intellectually and spiritually. Today’s kids and teens are looking for authenticity, integrity, and straightforward truth. Alex comes alongside parents and gives them tools to effectively answer not only their children’s toughest academic questions but also the questions that plague their hearts.

My thoughts:

When I got the opportunity to review this book I jumped at the chance because just the title alone drew me in.  As a Christian I too have had questions about religion that I haven’t gotten answers that seemed to work for me.  After reading the first five pages I could tell that I was going to not only get information to share with my children but I could also learn some things for myself.  One thing I’ve always been told about having faith is that you are not to question God, the Bible or anything about it and at times it just leads to more confusion and questions instead of helping me build a stronger faith or belief in the bible.  It seems that when hard times and trouble hits is when we are doubtful and questioning the most.  This is a must have for any family for their book shelf.  It’s not just about finding answers for your children but finding answers that could help anyone when you have a question about Christianity.

At The Feet Of Jesus Devotional

Title: At the Feet of Jesus: Daily Devotions to Nurture A Mary Hear

Author: Joanna Weaver

Publisher: WaterBrook Press

Published: 10/2012

ISBN: 978-0307731005

Genre: Devotional

Pages: 400

Price: $15.99

About the Book:

You were made for more than serving God; you were made to know Him.

Intimacy with God—to know Him and be known by Him. It is what our hearts desperately need, but somehow life conspires to keep us busy and distracted.

For anyone who struggles when it comes to daily devotions, At the Feet of Jesus extends an irresistible invitation to set aside your duties and find the amazing peace and incredible joy that come from time alone with Him. Drawn from Joanna Weaver’s beloved Bethany trilogy, each reading in this 365-day devotional includes a Bible reading passage and reflection question. All-new material and “Going Deeper” sidebars are also woven throughout.

Discover for yourself the riches that come from spending a portion of each day alone with God. At the feet of Jesus—where true life begins! Includes a unique One-Year Bible Reading Guide.

My thoughts:

I like the idea of having a daily devotional.  The description of this book really drew me in because it talks about intimacy with God and knowing him.  Often we are so focused on serving God that we don’t focus on knowing him and building a truly intimate relationship with him.  I want to close my eyes, prayer and read about God, ask him to help me understand the words and teaching of the bible.  I like this yearly devotional because each day I open it up and read the Bible passage and the reflection question.  I do wish it wasn’t already dated so if you missed a day you don’t have to skip around.  I just received the book a few weeks ago so I couldn’t read the start of the book.

Nothing is repetitive in this book, each one different and though provoking.  It starts with the bible scripture, then Weaver starts telling a story whether it’s about her life, other religions and cultures, what if situations, and bible parables, then it ends with another bible verse and a question for reflection.  You are guided to think more and evaluate how the devotional for that day relates to you.  This is a great way to get back into or to start reading your bible.  I like to start with the verse at the beginning and read some of the other verses.  This book is great for any Christian woman.  Even if you are not reading the bible with this its a great way to get someone started with building towards an intimate relationship with God.

To learn more about the book you can on the publisher’s website or buy it on Amazon.
